3 Kinds of Acne Scars and How to Treat Them

Scars or discoloration that form after an acne breakout are very common cosmetic concerns for both women and men. While there are a number of effective treatment options available, the best one for you will depend on the type of acne scars that you are dealing with. Take a look at 3 common types of acne scars and how each one is best treated.

Atrophic Scars

Atrophic scars are depressions in the skin that form when not enough collagen is produced during the healing process. Types of atrophic acne scars include boxcar, ice pick and rolling scars.

Injectable fillers can be used to fill in pitted scars. Although this is a temporary solution, fillers can last for a year or more before needing to be retouched.

Microneedling with radiofrequency can also treat atrophic scars by stimulating collagen to improve the appearance of scarring

Hypertrophic Scars

Hypertrophic scars are the opposite of atrophic scars – they form raised areas where acne blemishes were. This type of scar can be caused by an overproduction of scar tissue during the healing process, or when scar tissue builds up from previous acne breakouts in the same spot.

Laser skin resurfacing and cryotherapy can be used to improve hypertrophic scars. In some cases of larger hypertrophic scars, corticosteroid injections or surgical removal can be used.

Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH)

While not technically a type of scar, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is a very common type of skin discoloration that is often left behind after an acne breakout. When you have active acne, avoid popping pimples or picking at scabs to reduce the risk of developing PIH.

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation can be improved with topical skin brightening ingredients and proper sun protection.
