First Time Getting BOTOX®? Here’s What to Expect

If you’re thinking about trying BOTOX® for the first time, it’s completely normal to feel curious or even a little nervous about what the process is like. The good news is that BOTOX treatments are generally quick and easy and don’t require downtime afterwards.

To help you feel confident and prepared walking into your first BOTOX appointment, we’ve put together this guide of what to expect before, during and after BOTOX injections.

BOTOX Appointment Prep

At least 24 hours before your BOTOX appointment day, Dr. West recommends avoiding alcohol, caffeine, aspirin, ibuprofen and other NSAIDs, as these can increase the risk of bruising. Do not wax or pluck hair in areas that will be treated with BOTOX in the days leading up to your appointment.

On the day of your BOTOX appointment, arrive with clean skin and do not wear makeup or any skincare products – this includes sunscreen. Before injections are administered, we will ensure your skin is clean and properly prepped. Dr. West will then carefully assess your facial anatomy and mark injection sites for the most precise results.

During Your BOTOX Injections

The actual injection time for BOTOX is fairly quick, usually taking only 5 to 10 minutes, depending on the size and number of areas being treated. Dr. West uses a fine needle to administer BOTOX to the marked areas. Most of our Ann Arbor BOTOX patients describe the sensation as a quick pinch or a series of tiny pricks. Many people are even surprised at how quick and easy the injection experience is. Before you know it, you’ll be done and on your way back to your normal day, since there is no downtime to worry about afterwards.

What to Expect after Getting BOTOX

Immediately after your appointment, you may notice a little redness, mild swelling or bruising around the injection sites. These effects are temporary and usually resolve within a couple of days. You might also feel a mild heaviness or tightness as the BOTOX begins to settle in – this is completely normal and should also diminish over the coming days.

While you may notice subtle changes within a few days, full BOTOX results usually develop over 1 to 2 weeks. Lines and wrinkles should gradually soften and swelling and bruising will diminish, leaving your skin looking smoother and more refreshed.

While there is no formal downtime after BOTOX, there are a few aftercare steps to keep in mind for the best results:

  • Avoid rubbing or massaging the treated areas for at least 24 hours.
  • Skip strenuous exercise for the rest of the day.
  • Don’t lie down or bend forward for long periods for the first few hours after treatment.
