Can Filler Treatments “Ruin” Your Face?

Many people who try out injectable filler treatments find that these solutions for facial wrinkles and volume loss are a perfect fix for their cosmetic concerns. In fact, regular treatments every 4 to 6 months can help you look refreshed for years to come.

But recently there’s been some talk that if you choose to stop having injectables – maybe because your budget is tight, or you’re preparing for a surgical procedure – your face might look strange. Could you actually look older or more tired than you would have otherwise when you stop having treatments? What will happen if you start up dermal fillers after taking a break?

Stopping Fillers Does No Damage

The short answer is that these concerns are overblown. You do not need to fear stopping dermal filler treatments if you want or need to. Stopping fillers will not “ruin” your face or accelerate the aging process. The same is true for starting treatments back up after a break.

The biggest thing our patients notice if they’ve had a gap in injectable filler treatment is that, if anything, they look a little less like themselves. This is particularly true for patients who have been having filler injections for many years. You get used to the smoother skin and youthful facial contours you see in the mirror everyday. When those naturally dissipate after fillers are stopped, it can be noticeable – but it won’t be an overnight change for the worse.

The Bigger Concern: Bad Providers

Fillers administered by an experienced provider are highly unlikely to cause any permanent effects. The same isn’t true when untrained or even black market providers give injections. First off, you may or may not be receiving the filler product you paid for. Unfortunately, periodic news stories report on people who have had off-brand injectables or have mistakenly trusted a shady provider. These injections could lead to swelling, scarring or other damage.

By choosing a reliable provider like our practice, you can rest easy knowing that filler injections have a long track record of safety and our skilled injectors can help you look refreshed and revived. And if at some point you want to take a break from fillers, you can do so safely without compromising your appearance. Call our office at 734-971-0262 or fill out our contact form to make your dermal filler appointment.
