Do You Need to “Spring Clean” Your Skin Care?

As seasons change, so can your skin’s needs. Cold, dry Michigan winters can leave your skin feeling dry and rough as we head into spring. This is why this time of year is ideal to revamp your skin care routine so you can kick off the warmer weather with a fresh, rejuvenated complexion.

By following these three simple steps, your skin can be well on its way to looking and feeling refreshed in time for spring and summer.

1. Swap Skin Care Products Based on Your Skin Type

Some people do best when adjusting their skin care routine with the seasons. Those with dry skin, for example, might do best with a heavier moisturizer in the winter, when cold, dry air makes dry, uncomfortable skin even worse. As humidity and warmer weather start to return in the spring, many dry skin types can switch to a lighter moisturizer.

Some oily skin types begin using a daily moisturizer in the winter to account for the lost moisture in the air. If your skin produces enough oil on its own, you may be able to skip this step or use a moisturizer less frequently in the spring and summer.

2. Check for Expired Products

Spring is a great time to not only spring clean your house but to also take inventory of your skin care collection, tossing out any expired products. Many skin care ingredients lose efficacy over time, and exposure to light and air can accelerate this process. This is why it is important to replace any expired products or those that have been stored in warm, light areas (such as your shower) for long periods of time.

This goes for any sunscreens that might have been forgotten about in a beach bag or in the back of your car since last summer. SPF ingredients can quickly degrade if not stored properly and if expired, so check those expiration dates and stock up on sunscreen if you need to for the coming sunny season!

3. Refresh and Revive with Supplementary Skin Treatments

In addition to revamping and “spring cleaning” your skin care regimen, treating yourself to a professional skin treatment or two can be a great way to revitalize your complexion this time of year. The best skin treatment for you will depend on your unique skin concerns, but some of the most popular spring skin treatments include:

  • Peels. Peels like NEOVA chemical peels can help to revive dull, dry winter skin by gently removing the outermost layer of dry, dead skin cells, revealing the fresh new layer underneath. These peels can be customized to suit your unique skin type and needs.
  • IPL photofacials. If you’re struggling with dark spots, redness or other pigmentation concerns, IPL skin treatments can help to gently improve skin tone with little to no downtime.
  • Injectables like fillers and BOTOX® or Dysport® can be a great way to rejuvenate your look this spring, whether you’re looking to smooth away wrinkles or add subtle volume to your lips or cheeks.
