How Many Sessions Do I Need for Acne Scar Treatments?

Most acne scar treatments for depressed or indented acne scars work by stimulating collagen production to “fill in” the indent. Because of this, these treatments tend to work best in a series of sessions, usually spaced a few weeks apart. The exact number of acne scar treatments you may need will depend on the type of treatment and the type and severity of scarring.

3 to 4 Sessions with Morpheus8

Morpheus8 combines microneedling technology with radiofrequency, using both to stimulate collagen within the skin to create a smoother, more even texture. This treatment is typically most effective for rolling scars and mild to moderate atrophic, or indented, acne scars.

While most Ann Arbor acne scar treatment patients typically need 3 to 4 Morpheus8 sessions, this number can vary based on each individual’s needs. Factors that can affect how many Morpheus8 sessions you might need for acne scars include:

  • The depth and texture of your scars.
  • Your skin’s natural healing response.
  • Whether you are combining Morpheus8 with other treatments or skin care products for acne scars.

1 to 6 Sessions with CO2 Lasers

CO2 lasers use a gas mixture containing carbon dioxide and laser energy to gently remove the outer layer of skin. This process stimulates collagen and cell renewal. This is typically a more aggressive treatment option than Morpheus8 with longer downtime. However, CO2 lasers can generally treat deeper atrophic scars that do not respond well to other treatment options.

For some people, 1 to 2 CO2 laser treatments are enough to achieve the desired result. For others, it may take 3 to 6 sessions. Dr. West will create a personalized treatment plan for you based on:

  • The type and depth of scarring.
  • Your skin type and tone.
  • The size of the area being treated.

Every 12 to 18 Months with Fillers

Dermal fillers work a bit differently to smooth away the appearance of atrophic acne scars. They physically “fill in” the indents to create a smoother and more even skin texture on the surface and do not necessarily increase collagen. Thus, their effects are temporary, lasting an average of 12 to 18 months before needing to be retouched. However, you will see an immediate improvement in the appearance of acne scars after getting dermal fillers.

Fillers can be combined with other treatments, including microneedling and lasers, for enhanced results.
