How to Keep Your Skin Merry, Bright and Hydrated All Winter

Those of us here in Ann Arbor know what the cold winter air can do to our skin. Cold air outside, dry heat indoors and the constant shift between the two can leave your skin dull, flaky and uncomfortable. But the good news is that with the right skin care products and a few easy adjustments, you can keep your skin glowing all season long.

1. Start with a Gentle, Hydrating Cleanser

Your skin barrier is already under stress in winter, so harsh foaming cleansers can make dryness worse. If you struggle with dry skin this time of year, switch to a hydrating cleanser such as Alastin Ultra Calm Cleansing Cream that removes dirt and makeup without stripping away your skin’s natural oils.

If you’re unsure about the best cleanser or other skin care products for your specific skin type, Dr. West and her team would be happy to help you create a customized skin care plan for the winter.

2. Brighten Your Skin with Antioxidants

Dullness is one of the biggest skin complaints during Michigan winters, thanks to limited sunlight and increased dryness. Adding an antioxidant-rich serum can help to restore radiance and even out tone.

The C-Radical Defense Antioxidant Serum is a popular product for winter. It combines vitamin C with advanced peptides and 14 additional antioxidants to protect your skin against environmental damage and boost brightness without irritation. Regular use helps to maintain that healthy, glowing look, even when the skies outside are gray.

3. Lock in Moisture

Hydration is key this time of year, but it is important to choose the right type of moisturizer for your skin. If you have dry, itchy skin in the winter, look for a barrier repair moisturizer that can mimic your skin’s natural oils and seal moisture inside. Oily skin types can use a lighter moisturizer to add hydration without creating a shine under makeup.

Additionally, you can try adding a humidifier to your bedroom or workspace to help combat dry indoor air during the winter months.

4. Don’t Forget Sun Protection

It’s easy to skip sunscreen when it’s cloudy and cold, but UV rays still reach your skin year-round, and snow can even reflect them back onto your face. A daily SPF protects your skin from UV damage that can otherwise contribute to premature aging, dryness and dullness.

The key is to choose a sunscreen that works well for your skin so you will want to use it every day, year-round.

5. Treat Yourself to Professional Care

Adjusting your skin care routine can go a long way to combat dry, flaky winter skin, but professional treatments can provide an extra boost through the harshest months. Microneedling, injectables and laser treatments can help to exfoliate dead cells, stimulate collagen and enhance your glow from within.

Dr. West and her team at Michigan Center for Cosmetic Services can help you choose the best treatments and brightening skin care products for your unique needs. To schedule your consultation today, call our Ann Arbor office at 734-971-0262 or get in touch online.
