Neck and jawline liposuction performed by our double board-certified cosmetic surgeon Jessica West can permanently eliminate unwanted fat throughout the area. At the Michigan Center for Cosmetic Services in Ann Arbor, MI, we offer several treatments designed to enhance the appearance of your chin and neck.
What Is Neck and Jawline Liposuction?
Certain parts of the body are known to accumulate stubborn pockets of fat that resist efforts to shrink them. Both men and women often experience this in the area surrounding the chin, neck, and jawline. When fat accumulates here, it presents as a double chin or jowl. Liposuction is an excellent tool to permanently remove fat that has resisted other efforts to eliminate it.
Neck and jawline liposuction is a minor surgical procedure and should only be performed by qualified cosmetic surgeons, like Dr. Jessica West at the Michigan Center for Cosmetic Services. It can effectively reduce excess fat from under the chin, jowls, and neck. By enhancing the jawline and restoring balance throughout your facial features, works to lift the entire face and help restore a more youthful appearance.
How Does Jawline Liposuction Work?
Just like with liposuction in any other part of the body, unwanted fat cells are gently removed from the body through suction. This is done through small incisions made at strategic locations in the treatment area. Dr. West uses a special process known as tumescent liposuction.
Tumescent liposuction utilizes local anesthetic and does not require sedation or general anesthesia. This allows patients to remain comfortable during the procedure, shortens downtime associated with other treatments, and facilitates a shorter recovery process.
Liposuction works well in the neck and chin region for several reasons. First, even though excess fat and loose skin often appear here, it is difficult to slim this region through diet and exercise.
Also, since the jawline is a very prominent location on the face, people who want to enhance their appearance can achieve results by removing excess fat and accentuating this area. Some people combine complementary treatments with their neck liposuction, such as FaceTite or AccuTite, to tighten loose or sagging skin for even more dramatic results.
What To Expect at Your Appointment
Like many of the other treatments we offer, neck and jawline liposuction can be performed right in our office. Localized anesthesia is used to numb the treatment area, although some clients might prefer an oral medication to ensure a comfortable and relaxing experience.
Your liposuction procedure is relatively brief, generally taking less than an hour from start to finish. Two or three small incisions will be made in discreet locations on your neck or chin. These allow a thin liposuction cannula to be inserted for direct access to the excess tissue. Suction is used to draw fat from the neck and chin while creating natural contours throughout the area.
Downtime and Recovery
There is a small amount of downtime associated with neck and jawline liposuction since patients will need to allow the treatment area to fully heal, including the incision sites. You will need to wear a supportive chin strap most of the day for the first week to facilitate that healing and wear it part-time for the following week (at night or after work).
You can expect a return to nonstrenuous activities the next day, and a return to exercise within two to three weeks after your procedure. For most people who undergo liposuction, the tiny incisions made during the procedure quickly become unnoticeable.
Noticeable Results Within Days
Results will be noticeable within the first 48 hours after having liposuction performed. Results will continue to improve as healing progresses, and it generally takes about 3 months to see the full results. A substantially slimmer profile and jawline will be the most pronounced effect.
If a lot of tissue is being removed during your liposuction treatment, you might consider adding a skin tightening or contouring treatment like FaceTite or AccuTite as well. Liposuction removes fat cells permanently, but a lifestyle that includes proper nutrition and exercise is required to maintain the results.
Who Should Consider Neck and Jawline Liposuction?
Liposuction is designed to address stubborn pockets of fat that resist other treatments. It is often recommended that you be within 30% of your target goal weight before considering liposuction. However, most healthy adults — both men and women — can undergo liposuction in the neck, chin, and jawline.
So, are you a good candidate for neck and jawline liposuction? If you can relate to the following statements, it might be a good choice for you:
- You want to reduce the appearance of a double chin or jowls
- You have always had stubborn fat under the chin, and it may run in the family
- You have already taken steps to improve overall body composition
- You have not had success with other, non-invasive fat reduction treatments
- You want to refine the appearance of your jawline
- You want a permanent solution
While liposuction is an excellent tool used by our skilled cosmetic surgeons, individuals with certain situations, concerns, or medical conditions may prefer another treatment choice. Some other examples of situations that might make you postpone neck and jawline liposuction or seek an alternative treatment include:
- Allergy to local anesthesia
- Severe cardiovascular disease
- Uncontrolled diabetes
- Kidney or liver disease
- Bleeding disorder
- Patients who want a non-surgical treatment
